AI agents are paying for APIs with x402. Most of the money goes to a few sellers.
HTTP has had a status code for "Payment Required" since the 1990s, and almost nothing used it. x402 is a protocol that Coinbase launched in May 2025 to give that code a job. An API answers a request with 402 and its price. The client, usually an AI agent, signs a stablecoin payment and sends the request again. The API checks the payment and returns the data.
October 2026 numbers show fast growth and a small real economy. Both facts are true, and you need both to judge the hype.
The payment fits inside one HTTP round trip
Ankr's launch post for its paid RPC on Monad lists the flow in five steps (Ankr).
- The agent calls an endpoint.
- The endpoint answers with HTTP 402 and the payment terms.
- The agent signs a USDC payment and sends the request again.
- A facilitator verifies and settles the payment onchain.
- The endpoint returns the data.
No account, signup, or API key is part of that flow. That matters for software. An agent cannot easily fill in a signup form or type a card number, but it can read a status code and sign a transaction.
The activity counts went up fast
Crypto Briefing reported on October 15, 2026, that monthly active senders rose 152% in 30 days to 43,100 (Crypto Briefing). Base had about 32,000 of those senders, Algorand about 9,100, and Solana about 1,600. The same report cites x402.org at 75.41 million transactions and $24.24 million settled over 30 days.
Supply grew too. Fizzl's daily scan checked 50,373 paid endpoints on October 17, up from 16,598 on September 23 (Fizzl). Of those, 93.1% were payable as listed. The median price was $0.01 per call.
Most sellers earn almost nothing
The filtered numbers tell a different story. The x402stats October report counts a seller as organic only with at least $100 of revenue, at least 3 buyers, and an average payment of at least $0.001 (x402stats).
- 91 wallets met that bar, out of 37,495 that received any payment.
- Organic volume was $793k over 30 days, down 32% from the month before.
- The top 10 wallets had 76% of the volume.
- The median seller earned $0.01 in the month.
ToolVet looked at buyers per API (ToolVet). Of 42,096 listed APIs with usage data, 55.3% had exactly one paying wallet in 30 days. That one wallet is often the seller testing its own endpoint. Only 0.9% had ten or more paying wallets. Fizzl found the same concentration from another side: one seller owns 41% of all payable endpoints.
So the $24 million and the $793k measure different things. The larger figure counts all settled payments. The smaller one removes facilitator wallets, self-payment, and dust. When you see an x402 headline, check which of the two it quotes.
What agents actually buy
ToolVet summarizes Chainalysis research on what x402 money pays for. The main groups are information services, model inference, and agent tooling. Information services include data, search, and code review. Inference means one AI agent paying another to run a model. Chainalysis also found that early activity came from fads that faded, and that the activity which lasted is mostly in information services.
Infrastructure providers are moving in. Ankr now sells Monad RPC calls and decoded transaction data per request, paid in USDC, with no API key.
My read
x402 solves a real problem. Pay-per-call with no account is the right model for software that buys services on its own. The protocol works, as 93% of endpoints pay out as listed. The demand is the open question. Fewer than one in a hundred listed APIs has ten paying wallets, and organic volume fell last month while sender counts rose.
If you build an agent, x402 is worth adding now, because the cost is low and the median call is a cent. If you trade tokens tied to the x402 narrative, watch the count of organic sellers, not the transaction count. That count went from 78 to 91 in a month. Nothing here is financial advice.
